Did They Ask for This?

It’s an open question whether the 70+ million who voted for this trajectory truly understood what they were endorsing—or if they expected something different entirely. Political movements often sell one vision but deliver another, and many people vote based on identity, grievances, or single issues rather than a comprehensive understanding of long-term consequences.

Did They Ask for This?

• Some Absolutely Did – A subset of voters actively supports authoritarianism, white Christian nationalism, and hierarchical power structures. They see democracy as a roadblock to their vision of an America that prioritizes their group.

• Some Were Misled – Many voters were sold the idea that they were “saving” the country from corruption, immigrants, socialism, or globalists—without realizing they were empowering a movement that undermines democracy itself.

• Some Just Wanted Stability – Many saw a broken system, distrusted the establishment, and were willing to take a risk on strongman politics, hoping it would “shake things up” for the better.

• Some Were Single-Issue Voters – Gun rights, abortion, religious values, economic promises—these drove votes without consideration of the broader authoritarian shift.

• Some Just Voted Against the Other Side – Tribalism is a powerful force. Some voters may not have loved their choice, but they hated the alternative more.

Now That the Mask is Off, What Happens?

If they expected economic renewal, strong leadership, or a return to “traditional values” and instead got creeping authoritarianism, social decay, and institutional collapse, they are now faced with a choice:

1. Double Down in Denial – Many will refuse to acknowledge they were wrong, choosing instead to justify, shift blame, or pretend the collapse is still someone else’s fault. This is the pride issue—letting go of their ego to admit that what they supported is not what they thought.

2. Passive Acceptance – Some will recognize the failure but feel powerless to do anything about it.

3. Shift Allegiances & Resist – Others, especially those who voted out of good faith or misinformation, may begin breaking ranks, realizing they were used.

4. Revolt Against the System Entirely – If the government devolves into full-blown authoritarianism, some may join a broader resistance movement, recognizing that their former party or movement no longer represents them.

Can They Set Pride Aside and Course-Correct?

That’s the defining question. It requires:

• Recognizing manipulation – Admitting that their fears and grievances were weaponized.

• Choosing democracy over tribal loyalty – Even if it means siding with people they once opposed.

• Prioritizing long-term survival over short-term frustration – Understanding that ideological purity and culture wars are meaningless in a collapsing state.

Are We Already Functioning Like a Third-World Government?

Arguably, yes. Many characteristics of failing states are already present:

• Political corruption & institutional erosion

• Media propaganda & disinformation replacing truth

• Erosion of rights & targeted oppression of groups

• Wealth concentration & declining middle class

• Growing acceptance of violence & state-backed persecution

If we’re not fully there yet, we are certainly flirting with it. And if those who enabled this don’t take a hard look at where this road leads, their first-world grievances won’t matter much when their reality becomes indistinguishable from the very dystopias they feared.

So the real question is: how many are ready to step back from the brink?
