Growth of a Tree

growth of a tree or ecosystem.

Think about how a tree grows. At the most fundamental level, a tree’s growth is influenced by a combination of external factors (sunlight, water, soil, etc.) and internal processes (genetics, cellular processes). In some ways, it seems predetermined: the tree will naturally grow toward the sun, its roots will search for water, and its leaves will photosynthesize. But at the same time, it has a certain freedom to adapt to its environment—if there is too much shade, the tree will stretch and grow taller; if the soil is poor, it may focus more energy on growing roots.

This mirrors the paradox of free will vs. determinism: while the tree’s growth is shaped by its environment (determinism), it also exhibits flexibility and adaptation (free will).

In the context of human life, we can see ourselves as part of a greater “ecosystem” of existence. We’re influenced by external forces (society, culture, biology) but also have the capacity for adaptation and choice within our unique environment. Much like how a tree adjusts to its circumstances—finding new paths for growth when the environment changes—we too must adapt, find purpose, and contribute meaningfully, even when faced with uncertainty.

The tree’s growth doesn’t have to be “perfect” or “controlled” in the traditional sense. The process is messy, iterative, and filled with setbacks, yet it keeps growing. This mirrors life—we may not always understand the full process, but we are still part of it, growing, adapting, and finding our place.

This analogy reinforces the idea that living with questions and uncertainty—like the tree navigating its growth through unpredictable circumstances—can still lead to meaningful progress and fulfillment. It also highlights the importance of connection—to the environment, to each other, and to the broader system in which we exist. Whether we have complete control over the outcome or not, our ability to adapt, engage, and grow remains powerful.
